What do I do if my water heater is leaking?

What do I do if my water heater is leaking?

If your water heater is leaking from either the bottom or the top you should follow the following steps and then contact a professional to evaluate. If you have a gas water heater you should:

Turn off the gas at the water heater – Turn the temperature all the way down to turn off gas to the water heater.

Turn off the main water supply – Water will continue to leak out of the water heater until the tank is drained. If you shut off the water supply you can prevent it from filling again until a plumber has arrived.

Drain the tank if there is a lot of water – We will drain the tank when we get to your home but if you have a lot of water and want to reduce or avoid any water damage you can drain the water from the tank by connecting a garden hose to the spout at the bottom of the water heater. Run it to a sink or gutter drain. If you have a lot of sediment in the tank and you drain it into your grass or driveway it can harm your grass or stain your driveway.

Electric water heater leak
