Extend the life of your water heater

We often don’t think of our water heaters until we don’t have any hot water. While your water heater typically doesn’t require much maintenance below are some common problems we see and may help extend the life and improve the performance of your water heater.

Flush your water heater

The manufacturer recommends flushing your water heater in your tank style water heaters once a year to remove sediment buildup. If your tank water heater has never been flushed and is older than 4 years it is recommended that you have a professional flush your water heater.

If you have a tankless water heater you need to have it flushed at least once a year to keep your manufacturer’s warranty. Tankless water heaters require flushing to maintain the heat exchanger effectiveness. Learn more about the importance of a tankless water heater flush in our video.

Adjust Temperature

Most water heaters allow you to adjust the temperature on a dial located on the water heater. Reducing your water heater’s temperature can save on your energy bills. We’ve compiled more information about temperature adjustment if you would like more information.

Get a Water Softener

Most homes in New Mexico have hard water. Water hardness can range by City or area. A water softener removes hard water before it enters the water heater which can reduce the sediment buildup in a water heater. If you are on a well or live in an area like parts of Rio Rancho that have very hard water you might find you have to replace your water heater more frequently than the normal 10-15 year period. The harder your water is the more quickly it can reduce the heating effectiveness of your water heater. If you find yourself replacing your water heater every every 5 years or so you might want to consider a water softener. TLC carries a full line of water softeners.
