Types of Swamp Coolers
Swamp coolers are very common among Albuquerque and Santa Fe homes, but there are also some newer types of swamp coolers that can cool better than a standard cooler. TLC is your swamp cooler expert, count on us to service, repair, install or upgrade your swamp cooler.
How a swamp cooler works:
Swamp coolers work by cooling air by evaporating water. The cooled air is then pushed through the duct system to cool the home.
- Popular in New Mexico because of our dry climate.
- Cooling effectiveness is driven by humidity levels outside.
- If humidity levels rise too high, cooler becomes less effective.
- See Average humidity levels below for reference.

Getting the Most from your Swamp Cooler:
When it comes to your swamp cooler you want to make sure you’re staying cool and comfortable all summer long. There are some easy things you can do to improve air flow and performance from your swamp cooler.
Swamp Cooler Digital Thermostat
Do you want to get better control of your home’s temperature this summer? Consider updating your swamp cooler to a digital thermostat. A swamp cooler digital thermostat can give you better control of your cooling in your home. Plus they help conserve energy by only running your cooler when your home reaches a certain temperature. The Albuquerque Water Authority is offering a rebate for installing a digital thermostat as well. TLC can install one of these thermostats for you.
Customer Reviews of TLC Plumbing’s Swamp Cooler Services
Very KnowledgeableJason M. was professional, efficient, knowledgeable, and very courteous. He listened to and answered my questions, was very polite and I was totally comfortable with him. He turned off my swamp cooler and turned on my heat, I was very happy and felt very safe that all connections were checked and safe. I would certainly ask for him for any service. TLC has an excellent employee.
Competitive RatesThey are on time with highly competitive rates. they have both repaired our swamp coolers and switched us from cooling to heating. Rates and quality were significantly better than the company we were using. We will continue with them.
Water Heater Pilot Wouldn't StartJust moved here from MD. My shower was cold this morning, water heater pilot did not restart, so I called the same company the previous owner used (TLC Plumbing & Utility). Fella named Terrance called me back, was pretty quick getting here and very quickly diagnosed the problem - gas was turned off. In MD our gas and electric are together. Now I know they aren't here. Since he was here I asked him about my swamp cooler which he was eager and quick to explain to me (we don't have these in MD, too humid). He explained why a soft cover was a bad idea where I live (higher winds here) and told me what all the sheet metal in my closet was for. I asked him, since he was here, if it would be a big deal to take the swamp cooler offer line for the season and you guessed it, no it wouldn't be. It probably took him all of half an hour to do it (in the dark no less). He was wonderful. Also offered me advice on what to do when I get my gas turned back on (miss a hot shower). He was simply great to work with and couldn't have been more helpful. I'll be calling TLC when my gas gets turned back on to restart everything and when I replace this old furnace.
New Swamp CoolerLeonard from TLC really saved the day with a new swamp cooler install. He (and TLC) came highly recommended by our roofer and got a new swamp cooler installed on a very tight timeline after a competitor let us down. We'll be working with TLC from now on - thank you!
Fixed Swamp Cooler PumpThe pump on my swamp cooler stopped working on Thursday evening. I decided on Saturday that it was not working at all since the temperature inside my home hovered at 88 degrees until after midnight. On Sunday morning I called TLC to have someone come out on that day even though it is a day for regular work. Within possible 30 minutes Travis called, told me he would be at my home within the hour and then appeared at my door. He was courteous, as usual dressed professionally in the companies uniform, as well as professional. He immediately went to the roof to see what the problem was. He changed the pump, checked the unit and was gone within 10-15 minutes. I could not have asked for better service! All I can say is "thank you so much for such a wonderful experience."
Great Customer ServiceTLC obviously cares about their customers. The customer service team promptly responded to an issue we had with an evaporative cooler start up. Thanks TLC we'll call you for all our plumbing needs.
Spring Change-OverRudy M. performed the spring change-over this morning --- shutting down the furnace and starting up the cooler. He was on time as promised, very polite, courteous, competent and confident. He explained clearly what he was doing and offered options for possible future contingencies. Things seem to be working fine since Rudy left. We are very pleased with his manner and technical expertise and would be happy to call on him in the future. As always, TLC has provided another good Tech!
Very ProfessionalI would like to commend the professionalism and kindness of Marcos who serviced my swamp cooler quickly. The problem was caused by another company. TLC has a great response time. Although it cost me for the weekend service, it was well worth it! 99 degrees is too hot!
