Top 6 Spring Cleaning Projects

Top 6 Spring Cleaning Projects Posted by on April 18, 2016 in Air Conditioning, Featured

Spring is here! Longer days, blooming trees, and allergies are upon us! So, too, is the time for Spring cleaning. Here are some of the top Spring cleaning projects to plan on tackling over the next couple of months.

1. Purge the closet

A great way to kick off Spring is to do a big ol’ closet purge. There are clothes that do not fit anymore (thank you, Christmas season goodies), clothes that are looking dingy or pilled or too stretched, and clothes that are just no longer “in.” Once the purge is complete, your closet will likely feel bigger and more organized. There are a couple of added benefits to closet purging. First, sometimes, a person will discover some great clothes that got lost in the shuffle and can move those to the front of the closet. Second, there are a number of places that buy second-hand clothing or will gladly accept donations to go to those folks who really need them. Not only do you declutter your closet, you can help others while doing so. Win-win!

2. Throw open those windows

Nothing feels as good as a house after a day of having those windows open and letting the fresh air in! Be sure to clean windows to get rid of any dust, danger, or other allergens that may have built up over the winter or thanks to the Springtime winds. Dust window sills and take the time to wash the windows (inside and outside) to ensure the best view of the green scenery appearing outside.

3. Prepare cooling system for summer

In addition to opening those windows, Spring is the time to get your cooling system ready for the summer. For folks with refrigerated air units, take steps like replacing air filters, removing debris around the condenser, and having an HVAC professional perform recommended annual maintenance. Not only will this help your ac unit function better and more efficiently, it will likely help with those pesky allergies that are soon to invade a nose near you. For those of you with swamp coolers, there is value in getting a professional to start-up your cooler. It is especially valuable if you have hard water, which can disrupt water flow and cooling if not cleaned properly. Contact an HVAC professional soon to avoid the rush of calls they will receive after the first warm day of the year.

For those of you with swamp coolers, have a professional start-up your cooler for summer. There is a great value to having a professional get your swamp cooler ready especially with the damaging effects of hard water in New Mexico.  Avoid the hassle of getting up and down the ladder and multiple trips to the home improvement store by having a professional make sure your cooler is operating properly.

4. Dust the ceiling

It is easy to forget about the top of the ceiling fan when doing weekly furniture dusting. Spring is the perfect time of year to clean a ceiling fan, especially for folks with swamp coolers, they can help keep the home cooler before its time to turn the cooler on.

5. Deep clean the floors

Regardless of the type of flooring in a home, a good deep clean is a great idea, and what better time to do that then the Spring. Steam cleaning hardwood floors and shampooing carpets is a great way to get rid of any of the winter grunge (ashes from the fireplace, mud from trekking through the house in snow boots) that may be sticking around.

6. Add some fresh scents

There is nothing that smells quite like the fresh scents of Spring. Fresh cut flowers. Farmers Market fruits and veggies. Spring scented candles or air fresheners. Take time to make your home smell like the Spring countryside! As this requires no scrubbing and no equipment, it is easily my favorite “cleaning” project!
